Rain, Flooding, Reschedule, No Problem – A Great Success!

The 2019 Memorial Golf Tournament was nothing if not interesting, especially if a member of the Golf Committee.  The initial scheduled date for the tournament was not only rained out, the course was flooded and several of the holes we had planned to play were washed out and unplayable.  The decision to reschedule was made the day before the tournament was to start.  The OCC staff, who were in the middle of an ownership change, and the American Legion golf committee scrambled to reschedule to our rain date two weeks later.   We not only had to plan for another date, we had to totally re-plan things like course layout, hole assignments for games, starting hole assignments, Hole-in-One contract, and … well you get the picture.

On top of all of that, the forecast for the morning of the rescheduled tournament called for a 70% chance of more rain.  When we showed up to set up for the tournament, the sky was clear and we had a beautiful day for golf.

With some player cancellations due to the re-schedule, we fielded 120 players and thanks to our very special sponsors and contributors, we netted an amazing $35,014.

The proceeds from the tournament will go to the next fiscal year’s commitments to help veterans, veterans’ families, various support organizations, Boys/Girls State, Veterans Day Parade, Onion Creek 4th-of-July Parade, flag retirement ceremony, Ft. Hood Turkey Day, scholarships to college for eight successful JROTC cadets at Akins, Hays, Lehman, and Bowie high schools, and to eight honorably discharged veterans attending University of Texas, Texas State University, or Huston-Tillotson.

Thank you to all of our Contributors, Sponsors, Players and Volunteers who made this possible!!!
